Scintimammography is a type of breast imaging test that is used to detect cancer cells in the breasts of some women who have had abnormal mammograms , or for those who have dense breast tissue , post-operative scar tissue or breast implants. Scintimammography is not used for screening or in place of a mammogram. Rather, it is used when the detection of breast abnormalities is not possible or not reliable on the basis of mammography and ultrasound. In the scintimammography procedure, a woman receives an injection of a small amount of a radioactive substance which is taken up by cancer cells, and a gamma camera is used to take pictures of the breasts. Breast-specific gamma cameras have been developed with a smaller field of view than conventional cameras, allowing higher resolution imagery and compression of the breast as in x-ray mammography which improves detection of smaller lesions. What is a BSGI? BSGI is a new and specialized breast imaging technique that incorporates the uses of Nuclear Medicine with breast imaging. BSGI is very useful in women with dense breast tissue, suspicious areas on a mammogram, lumps that can be felt but not seen on mammography or ultrasound, breast with implants and augmentation, and scarring from previous surgeries. This technique is offered in detecting breast abnormalities. BSGI images the metabolic activity of breast lesions through radiotracer 99m-technetium sestamibi uptake. It uses a high resolution gamma camera to detect subcentimetre breast cancers even less than 5 mm. Breast cancer is identified based on the differential uptake of radiotracer in cancer cells as compared with normal surrounding breast tissue. This procedure provides an easy, rapid and economic way to perform supplemental breast imaging of women with dense breast tissue, cosmetic implants, post-surgical scars and masses, multiple suspicious lesions, and palpable lesions not detected by mammography and ultrasound. Although a breast may be imaged in any position during a BSGI exam, it is designed to replicate positions used in mammography, specifically craniocaudal and mediolateral oblique projections.
